Northeastern lands a rugged USHL defenseman known for his punishing style and willingness to drop the gloves

Rookie USHL blueliner Brody Berard revealed his commitment to Northeastern University on Instagram yesterday. The native of Cumberland, RI is playing his first season of junior hockey with the Youngstown Phantoms. In 45 regular season games, Berard embraced his shutdown role while still earning 7 points (1 goal + 6 assists) and tying for a team second 72 penalty minutes.

Berard plays an intense, in your face style. He chases down loose pucks while throwing around his 6 foot, 190 body without hesitation. This fearlessness was on full display when Berard dropped the gloves with 21 year Washington Capitals prospect Jackson Crowder while holding his own. As a 16 year old, his frame is going to grow throughout his junior career.

For now, Youngstown and Berard are pursuing the USHL's Clark Cup. Their second round series against the Madison Capitals starts Friday, April 17 at 6:05pm CT
