The San Jose Sharks are expected to sign top prospect Will Smith this summer, SJHockeyNow's Sheng Peng reported Monday.
Drafted by the Sharks fourth overall in the 2023 NHL Draft, Smith is coming off an incredible freshman season at Boston College that saw him collect 71 points in 41 games to lead the nation in points.
While it was previously unknown if he would return to the Eagles for another season, this news is great for the Sharks organization and fans alike.
Forming a third of one of the most dominant lines in college hockey, Smith showcased that he was ready for the pro game. While it would have made sense if he wanted to go back to try and win a national championship, Smith will add to the exciting young talent the Sharks already have.
With this decision, Smith's line-mate and top Washington Capitals prospect Ryan Leonard could be swayed to turn pro. While it was announced he would be retuning for his sophomore season in April, one has to wonder if this will affect his decision.
As the Sharks get ready to most likely pick Macklin Celebrini with the first overall selection, the future is looking bright for the Sharks.
