Multiple top five teams went down, paving the way for major changes in the rankings

Week four of the 2026-27 NCAA Hockey season was the craziest yet. Two of the top three teams went down with more shakeups occurring nationwide. These, among other upsets, will surely cause ripples in the USCHO. Let's check out the biggest ones we saw this weekend.

Ferris State splits the weekend against No. 12 Michigan Tech

Ferris State was off to a 0-4 start before Saturday's match against Michigan Tech. Following an early Michigan Tech marker, the Bulldogs went on the attack Nathan Mackie and Akseli Pulkkanen secured victory via their two late first period goals. Six different Bulldogs notched points in the 2-1 win while Alan Lendak stopped 30 of 31 shots on goal. This is a momentum shifting game as Ferris State heads to meet Bemidji State this weekend.

Minnesota sweeps No. 3 North Dakota in the Twin Cities

In arguably the biggest upset performancse on the weekend, unranked Minnesota tangoed with–and swept–archival No. 3 North Dakota at home. Both games ended 5-3 in favor of the Gophers. Christian Humphreys potted a trio of tallies between the contests, while Wyatt Cullen put up 4 points (3 goals + 1 assist) on Saturday night. Between the pipes, Luca Di Pasquo and Melvin Strahl each earned a win. Strahl especially looked good in Friday's match, turning aside 42 of 45 shots. A sweep of this magnitude should galvanize Minnesota going into Happy Valley against Penn State.

New Hampshire shocks No. 2 Michigan State

Simple, effective hockey can work wonders and it did for New Hampshire. The Wildcats not only beat No. 2 Michigan State on Friday, they shut them out! Anahiem Ducks' prospect Émile Guité potted the game's lone goal at nine minutes into the third period. New Hampshire pounded the blue paint, outshooting Michigan State 34-14 while remaining very disciplined.  Despite the Spartans' 2-1 win on Saturday, New Hampshire recorded 39 shots on goal to Michigan States' 23. In a deep Hockey East, some teams can sneak up on opponents and the Wildcats are one of them.
