Colorado College sweeps a top-ten powerhouse and Holy Cross stuns Maine, highlighting a weekend of shocking results in week one of the 2026-27 season
This Sunday starts our new series chronicling the biggest upsets from each weekend of college hockey. Week one started off with a bang including the sweep of a top ten school. Outcomes will be listed in alphabetical order by the winning program's name.
Colorado College Sweeps No. 10 University of Massachusetts
Colorado College was picked sixth in the NCHC Preseason Poll, but you wouldn't guess that based on this weekend. The Tigers, outscored the Minutemen 8-1 across two games and looked like a well oiled machine. Goaltender Jackson Unger was nearly perfect, stopping 54 of 55 shots UMass threw at him. Meanwhile, Tampa Bay Lighting prospect Klavs Veinbergs dished out three assists to help power the forecheck.
The Tigers' next non-exhibition games are at No. 22 University of Connecticut on October 16 and 17. In the interim, Colorado hosts the United States National Team Development Program which given the USA's high octane style, should test the Tigers while keeping them ready for the Huskies.
Holy Cross Outlasts Maine In Overtime
Atlantic Hockey America is the youngest conference in college hockey and its teams are often times underdogs against more established programs. However, that wasn't the case for Holy Cross. After a 4-1 loss the night prior, the Crusaders bent but didn't break on Saturday. Holy Cross led for most of the night off a first period goal by Matthew Kursonis, with Noah Eyre doubling the advantage on a third period power play strike.
Maine stormed back with two tallies in the final three minutes to force overtime, proving their prowess as a Hockey East squad. Still, the Crusaders took home the win in the extra frame courtesy of Senior forward Connor Welsh. He called the goal a "Moment of joy" to the Worcester Telegram. Holy Cross' next test takes them to Arizona State this coming weekend.
USports Manitoba Shocks St. Thomas
This Canadian USports program is a perennial exhibition team for NCAA schools. The University of Manitoba is in the midst of a midwestern voyage through the United States before their regular season opener at the University of British Colombia. When the Bison clashed with the Tommies yesterday, they came up victorious by a 5-3 margin. While stats weren't immediately available, the fact that Manitoba took down a solid St. Thomas squad speaks volumes to the coaching and talent north of the border. North Dakota welcomes the Bison this afternoon with a 3:07pm CT puck drop
