Merrimack dismantles Mankato while Niagara and Vermont stun ranked powerhouses
Week three of the 2026-27 NCAA Hockey Season brought some more major upsets, turning lots of heads. While no top ten teams went down to unranked opponents, that doesn't mean the USCHO Rankings will remain the same. Here are the three biggest upsets from week three.
Merrimack College sweeps Minnesota State
Fresh off their first Hockey East Championship, Merrimack shows no signs of slowing down. I had Mankato winning the CCHA handily based on their defense, but the Warriors poked holes in the Mavericks' blue line. Merrimack won a hard fought Friday affair 4-3 in overtime. Clearly Head Coach Scott Borek's adjustments paid off on Saturday as the Warriors exploded to an 8-2 victory. Next on the docket for Merrimack is a trip to South Bend as the Warriors tangle with the new look Fighting Irish.
Niagara University sweeps No. 18 Bowling Green State
After nearly knocking off Michigan in Ann Arbor at the beginning of the month, many would think Bowling Green would roll through Niagara. They were mistaken. The Purple Eagles beat the No. 18 ranked Falcons both games this past weekend. Niagara spread the wealth with five different goal scorers and utilized both goaltenders between the two contests. Ranked in a tie for last place in the Atlantic Hockey America Preseason Poll, the Purple Eagles put their conference and the country on notice.
Vermont Splits Home Series Hosting No. 11 Boston University
Vermont was also listed at the bottom of their respective conference, Hockey East. Still, the Catamounts thrived against perennial National Champion contender Boston University. After trading goals in the first and a scoreless second following BU and Vermont were tied headed into the third. At the 8:10 mark, Zachary Filak tapped home the loose change for what would become the game winning goal. Vermont came close to a sweep the next night, but fell in overtime to the Terriers. The Catamounts are already sneaking up on teams in a hotly contested Hockey East.
