Mascots have a huge place in college hockey, and the best ones can embody a program perfectly. The countdown is at four, and we're heading to Quinnipiac to see Boomer.
College hockey is full of traditions, rivalries, and passionate fanbases, but every program also has its own personality. In this five-part series, we'll count down the five best mascots in college hockey, looking at their appearance, history, personality, and how well they fit the programs they represent. At No. four with one of the most recognizable mascots in college hockey: Boomer the Bobcat
If Bucky Badger brings old-school college hockey tradition, Quinnipiac's Boomer brings a completely different energy.
The Bobcats' mascot is hard to miss. Boomer is a large, cartoon-style bobcat with an oversized head, big paws and an expressive face that gives him plenty of personality. Usually seen wearing Quinnipiac's blue and gold, he embodies everything that this program wants to be.
The choice of a bobcat also makes sense for a hockey program. Bobcats are quick, athletic predators, and those qualities translate nicely to the speed and intensity of hockey. Boomer takes that tougher side of the animal and turns it into something much more fun. He's energetic, playful, and built to interact with a crowd.
That is exactly the kind of mascot Quinnipiac needs.
Quinnipiac hockey's rise is one of the best stories in the sport. The program's trajectory completely changed after Rand Pecknold took over in 1994, eventually turning the Bobcats into a national contender. Quinnipiac reached its first NCAA championship game in 2013 before finally breaking through a decade later.
In 2023, the Bobcats did it, winning their first NCAA Division I men's hockey national championship. Quinnipiac defeated Minnesota 3-2 in overtime in the championship game after going undefeated at home and winning a program-record 34 games.
That championship changed the atmosphere around Quinnipiac hockey forever. Thousands of fans packed M&T Bank Arena for the celebration, while Boomer was right in the middle of it all.
And that's what makes Boomer such a good fit.
Boomer is energetic, recognizable, and a little goofy, but there's still something fierce about the bobcat underneath it all.
