Wisconsin forward William Whitelaw has transferred to the University of Michigan, he announced Monday.
The 2023 third-round draft pick (66th overall) of the Columbus Blue Jackets had a decent freshman season with the Badgers, where he scored 10 goals and added seven assists for 17 points in 37 games.
Before joining Wisconsin this past season, Whitelaw played his junior hockey for the Youngstown Phantoms where he put up an impressive 36 goals and 61 points in 62 games and won USHL Clark Cup.
While Whitelaw might not have fit as well as he'd hoped for with the Badgers, the move to Michigan is a good bet for the Rosemount, MN., native as he joins a Wolverines team that lost a lot of their top players to the professional ranks.
While it is yet to see what role he will play for the Wolverines next season, Whitelaw has the potential to be an important player for the team alongside players such as Rutger McGroarty and Nick Moldenhauer.
As he looks to earn a contract with the Blue Jackets, expect Whitelaw to be motivated as he heads into his sophomore season.
