KHL goalie uses butt end of stick to make desperation save

KHL goaltender Mikko Koskinen made one of the most miraculous saves you’ll see all season when, going behind his back, he swept the puck off the goal line with the butt end of his stick. This save is incredible.

Nashville’s Carter Hutton may have all but locked up save of the year honors the other night, but he has some competition from the KHL.

During a Wednesday night contest, SKA St. Petersburg’s Mikko Koskinen was forced to make a diving save to his right. After making the stop, the puck then bounced off of a St. Petersburg defenseman and trickled towards the wide open net. Lying on his stomach, Koskinen swept the butt end of his stick behind him and, amazingly, managed to knock the puck out of harm’s way.

It takes until the third angle to really get a clear view of just exactly how the SKA netminder kept the puck from crossing the line. Koskinen, who was dealt to St. Petersburg Dec. 5 in a goalie-for-goalie swap, will certainly endear himself to the SKA faithful with more stops like this.

The Finnish goaltender’s name might be familiar to some. Drafted in the second round (31st) of the 2009 draft by the New York Islanders, Koskinen spent three seasons in North America, suiting up for the Utah Grizzlies, Bridgeport Sound Tigers and playing four games with the Isles.

Koskinen’s save would end up being a key one, as SKA held on for a 3-2 victory.
