It was reported on Tuesday that Mayich had collapsed and was hospitalized following an off-ice training incident on Thursday. It occurred during an outdoor workout at Arizona State University. The school is investigating the situation, according to The Athletic's Katie Strang and Jeremy Rutherford.
"The entire Blues organization is keeping Matthew Mayich close to our hearts as we pray for his comfort and recovery while he continues to undergo medical treatment in Arizona," Armstrong said.
"His agent has kept us informed about Matthew's medical status over the last week, and we extend our deepest support to his family, friends and teammates during this difficult time."
Mayich, 21, was selected by St. Louis in the sixth round of the 2023 NHL draft with the 170th pick. The defenseman is entering his sophomore season after spending this past year with Clarkson University in his first year of NCAA hockey.
The 6-foot-3 blueliner recorded seven goals and eight points for 15 points in 34 regular-season games for Clarkson.
Previous to his first year of college hockey in 2025-26, Mayich played four seasons in the OHL for the Ottawa 67s.
"The entire Ottawa 67’s organization is keeping Matthew Mayich and his family in our thoughts during this unimaginably difficult time and wishing him a full and speedy recovery," the team said in a statement on Wednesday.
He featured in a total of 256 regular-season games with the 67s, scoring 21 goals and 99 points across those four years. In his final OHL campaign, Mayich notched seven goals and 42 points in 66 appearances.
The Stoney Creek, Ont., native is set to join Arizona State for the 2026-27 season.
