As a player, it was often said that Wayne Gretzky was so good at knowing where the puck was going to be seconds before it got there, that it was as though he had eyes in the back of his head.

On Wednesday, the Hall of Fame centre, who is now an analyst for TNT, took his psychic abilities to another level by accurately predicting in detail how Edmonton Oilers captain Connor McDavid would set up Mattias Ekholm for the game-tying goal in a 5-4 overtime win against the Florida Panthers.

"They're smothering them. They're playing really smart. They're playing the Rick Tocchet defense. They've got that forward in the middle," Gretzky told the rest of the TNT panel during the second intermission. "They've giving them the outside. Connor's going to have to take it around the net or stop up and hit the late guy, because they're cutting everything off going to the net."

Just as Gretzky predicted, the Oilers tied the game in the third period on a play where McDavid took the puck wide into the offensive zone and as he was circling around the net flipped a backhand pass to the late trailing Ekholm.

"Call him now Greztradamus," said the other analysts.

"Let me tell you something, that's called luck," said Gretzky, downplaying his prediction. "He's the best player in the world. I just got lucky with that statement."

Indeed, saying that McDavid would be the player who would help spur Edmonton's comeback is not exactly going out on a limb. After all, they call him McJesus for a reason.

The defending Conn Smythe Trophy winner, who led last year's playoffs with 42 points, once again leads the post-season with 28 points. Of those, 22 are assists, which alone would put him second in overall scoring.

In overtime, McDavid once again showed off his play-making ability, this time setting up Leon Draisaitl for his second goal of the game as the Oilers took a 1-0 series lead. It was the third OT winner for Draisaitl in these playoffs, with McDavid having assisted on two of them.

“I’ve seen them do it many times,” goaltender Stuart Skinner told reporters. “Hopefully I’m able to see them do it a lot more.”

After the game, the Oilers once again blasted their unofficial post-win celebration song, "Pink Pony Club" by Chappell Roan, which had the 64-year-old Gretzky confused.

"Pink Pony, is that a band or a song?" he asked the TNT panel.

"It's a woman. She sings a song called Pink Pony Club and it's famous. It's on the radio," said analyst Paul Bissonnette. "All of a sudden it popped off, I believe she won a few Grammy's, and they're rocking it in the locker room. It's the new generation, Wayne."

"I've got to get that on my ring-tone," said Gretzky.
