One of the NHL’s more intriguing options in free agency came off the market Wednesday when Ryan Donato signed a four-year, $16-million contract extension with the Chicago Blackhawks.

Donato had a career-best season of 31 goals and 62 points in 80 games, and in a free-agent class that is relatively shallow, the 29-year-old could’ve made more on the open market. But the deal worth $4 million per year is a reasonable gamble for the Hawks, given that Donato’s previous career best on offense was a 16-goal, 31-point performance for the Seattle Kraken in 2021-22.

Donato’s new contract has to a victory for Chicago, which won’t be the most attractive destination anytime soon, even with budding superstar center Connor Bedard and other youngsters on board. The Blackhawks will still have a tough time making the playoffs in the highly competitive Central Division, so convincing Donato to re-sign is a feather in the cap of GM Kyle Davidson.

“Ryan brings energy and competes hard every game, which has been a huge asset to our team over the last two seasons,” Blackhawks GM Kyle Davidson said in the news release. “He’s been a crucial part of our offense, and we’re excited for Ryan to continue to make a difference in our lineup for the next four years.”

Donato may wind up being Bedard’s left winger next season, or he may turn out to be Chicago’s second-line center, depending on the development of young pivot Frank Nazar. In any case, Donato’s return helps clear up the picture for new Hawks coach Jeff Blashill. And if Donato can generate anything close to the amount of offense he generated last year, he’ll remain a bargain.

There’s definitely a possibility that Donato’s output won’t be as great as it was last season. But he likely signed this deal because of his familiarity with the organization and his relationship with his Blackhawks teammates. As Bedard develops his playmaking skills, there’s a chance Donato’s ceiling rises even higher.

Donato will be a key component of the Hawks as they build back up. If things go as well for him as team brass hopes, there will be better vibes in Chicago next season.
