The Ottawa Senators have completed the finishing touches to signing Claude Giroux to a one-year contract extension. Giroux will earn $2 million in base salary, along with the opportunity to earn a maximum of $4.75 million in additional bonuses. This contract also includes a full no-move clause.
Ottawa GM Steve Staios shared what he values most in his latest signing.
“Claude brings veteran leadership and a competitive edge to our group and has been a consistent presence on and off the ice,” Staios said. “We are excited to bring him back next season.”
PuckPedia broke down the bonus structure for Giroux’s new contract. The Ottawa native can earn an additional $250,000 for playing 20, 30 and 60 games next season, and for making the playoffs.
With that, he can make another $500,000 for advancing past Round 1 of the playoffs, $250,000 for Round 2, $500,000 for the third round and a final $500,000 if the Sens win the 2026 Stanley Cup. To earn those post-season bonuses, Giroux must play at least 50 percent of the team’s playoff games.
After locking up Giroux to this one-year deal, Ottawa have around $8.19 million in salary cap space, per PuckPedia. The Sens still have a handful of free agents to deal with, including goaltender Anton Forsberg, as well as Adam Gaudette, Nick Cousins and more.
The 37-year-old veteran is coming off a three-year contract with the Senators, where he earned $6.5 million in average annual value, but he has slowly declined in terms of offensive production since he joined in 2022-23
Last season, Giroux scored 15 goals and 35 assists for 50 points in 81 appearances. That’s 20 fewer goals and 29 fewer points than his first season in Ottawa.

Giroux had a solid post-season in Ottawa’s return to the playoffs for the first time in eight years. In the six games he featured in against the Toronto Maple Leafs in the first round, he scored one goal and recorded four assists for five points.
In his 18 seasons in the NHL, Giroux has played 1,263 games and scored 1,116 points in his career.
