One of the best good-news stories of the off-season came Monday when Nicklas Backstrom announced his intention to play with Brynas of the Swedish League next season.

After missing all last season with hip issues, Backstrom is trying to do in Sweden what Jonathan Toews is doing in the NHL.

I can't think of a single person who would not want this to work out. Backstrom is one of the most humble stars of his generation. And when he was at the top of his game, he was one of the best set-up men of his generation.

So what if he comes out like a house on fire in the first half of the season? Would the Swedish Hockey Federation consider him for the 2026 Olympic team? Well, a guy can dream, eh?
