Alex Formenton is making his return to the NHL after spending the past three seasons in Switzerland, joining the Edmonton Oilers on a one-year contract.

The Edmonton Oilers announced on Wednesday that they agreed to a one-year contract with forward Alex Formenton that will carry an $850,000 cap hit.

Formenton spent the past three seasons with HC Ambri-Piotta in Switzerland's top professional league, recording 33 goals and 19 assists for 52 points over 88 games in that span.

The 26-year-old was one of five former Canadian World Junior players who were acquitted of sexual assault charges in July of 2025 in connection with an alleged incident that occurred in June of 2018 in London, Ontario.

On Sep. 12, 2025, the NHL and NHLPA agreed on a suspension for each player involved,  and they have each been eligible to return to the NHL since the league reinstated them on Dec. 1, 2025.

While the Ottawa Senators held Formenton's rights while he was outside of the NHL, Postmedia's Bruce Garrioch reported earlier this summer that the franchise cut ties had with the forward, making him an unrestricted free agent.

Earlier this summer, Hockey Canada upheld suspensions for each player after an independent board revealed that they breached the governing body's code of conduct.

Formenton was reinstated immediately, making him eligible to participate in the organization's sanctioned events while Carter Hart, Dillon Dube, Michael McLeod and Cal Foote each remain suspended.

Formenton was a second-round pick of the Senators in 2017 and suited up for 109 games with the club across four years. His most productive offensive season in the NHL was his last one in 2021-22, where he scored 18 goals and finished with 32 points in 79 games.
