Hockey Canada invited 92 players to its men's, women's and Para hockey national team orientation camps in the lead-up to the 2026 Olympics.
The national teams orientation camp is scheduled for Aug. 26 to 28 in Calgary. It's an off-ice event that includes presentations, team-building activities, meetings and media opportunities.
For the men's group, 42 NHL players were selected, including 26 forwards, 13 defensemen and three goaltenders. They include the six players already named to the roster – Sidney Crosby, Connor McDavid, Nathan MacKinnon, Cale Makar, Brayden Point and Sam Reinhart – along with all the players who won gold at the 4 Nations Face-Off.
Other invited players who weren't at the 4 Nations Face-Off include Mark Scheifele, MacKenzie Weegar, Connor Bedard, Quinton Byfield, Robert Thomas and more.
On the women's side, 30 players were invited, including 16 forwards, 10 defenders and four goaltenders. Of that group, 17 of them won gold for Canada at the 2022 Olympics. They include PWHL MVP Marie-Philip Poulin, PWHL rookie of the year Sarah Fillier, veterans Erin Ambrose and Natalie Spooner and more. In net, Emerance Maschmeyer, Ann-Renee Desbiens, Kayle Osborne and Eve Gascon were invited.
As for Canada's national Para hockey team, 20 players received an invitation, including 11 forwards, six defenders and three goaltenders. Nine of the players earned a silver medal at the 2022 Paralympics, and 16 of them won gold at the 2024 World Para Hockey Championship. Among the invited players are Tyler McGregor, Dominic Cozzolino and Liam Hickey, who each led the 2024 worlds in scoring, with 17 points in five games.
Hockey Canada president-CEO Katherine Henderson said this season will be a particularly exciting time for the sport.
“We certainly do not take for granted the opportunity and privilege we have to unite Canadians through our national winter sport, and we are confident that our national team athletes, coaches and staff will represent our country with tremendous pride on and off the ice as they deliver on our commitment to performance excellence,” Henderson said in a news release.
