Edmonton Oilers fan, Canadian prime minister Mark Carney, said he's proud of the team despite losing to the Florida Panthers in the Stanley Cup final for a second straight year.

Carney posted to social media on Tuesday night following Edmonton's 5-1 loss to the Panthers in Game 6.

"Proud of the Oilers' grit," Carney wrote. "Proud of the guys for getting us to this moment. Heads high. Next year. #LetsGoOilers."

The prime minister practised with the Oilers during a morning skate in March. He wore goalie skates, considering he used to play in net.

Carney, 60, was a third-string netminder for Harvard University's varsity squad in the 1980s, getting to play part of a 10-2 win against Colgate and stop all the shots he faced. Former Oilers GM Peter Chiarelli captained the Crimson during Carney's senior year, and they were roommates.

Carney was also a backup goalie for the University of Oxford's men's hockey team.

While Carney was born in Fort Smith, N.W.T., he grew up in Edmonton when the Oilers were winning Stanley Cup championships, starring Wayne Gretzky, Mark Messier and Paul Coffey.

"I assume not too many former prime ministers have been Oiler fans, so it's nice to have one that cheers for the good team," Oilers coach Kris Knoblauch told reporters after that March 20 practice.

Carney frequently posted to social media about the Oilers during the playoffs.

During Game 5, Carney posted a photo of himself and the U.K.'s prime minister, Keir Starmer, raising their beers at a pub in Ottawa while watching the matchup with the "Let's go Oilers" hashtag.

After the Oilers' Game 4 win that tied the series at 2-2, Carney wrote, "Drag 'em back to Oil Country."

Following the Game 6 loss, Conservative Party of Canada campaign manager Jenni Byrne and member of Parliament for Calgary Nose Hill, Michelle Rempel Garner, each posted caption-less photos of Carney wearing an Oilers jersey and smiling at the camera. Byrne is a Montreal Canadiens fan, while Rempel Garner grew up cheering for the Winnipeg Jets before they relocated to Arizona and has posted messages of support for the Jets 2.0 before on social media as well.

Carney, the Liberal party leader, hosted the 2025 G7 Leaders' Summit in Kananaskis, Alta., which ran from June 15 to 17.
