To be fair, when Rory McIlroy entered the Canadian Open golf tournament last week, he had some concerns about his game. His driver was really wonky, to the point where he tried out a new 44-inch driver. And then he sprayed it all over the course for two days before missing the cut by miles, or kilometres, since we're talking about the Canadian Open.
You know what else he did? He accepted a Toronto Maple Leafs sweater from team president Keith Pelley, then boldly proclaimed, "If I can win the Masters, then the Leafs can win the Stanley Cup."
Gulp. McIlroy missed the cut and had his worst 36 holes of his PGA career. Coincidence? Maybe. But if he goes home to Florida, where they have a couple of winning hockey teams, then comes back and wins the U.S. Open next weekend, we'll know for sure that associating yourself with such a mediocre organization is not good for your game.
