There are two things you need to know about how Ottawa Senators goalie Linus Ullmark played in Game 1 of the Battle of Ontario.
He entered the game with a career playoff save percentage of .887. He left the game with a career playoff save percentage of .877.
In a game in which the inexperienced Senators needed their veteran goalie to bail them out, Linus Ullmark failed to do that. At the other end, Anthony Stolarz was bailing out his teammates – yes, you, Morgan Rielly – on a regular basis.
This would not be such a concern for the Senators if not for Ullmark's spotty playoff history. That narrative was reinforced in Game 1, but the Senators think Ullmark will bounce back.
Senators coach Travis Green bristled at my question about Ullmark's goaltending. I suggested it was the elephant in the room.
"I like our goaltending," Green said. "I like our goalie a lot. He's a good goalie. He's won a Vezina Trophy. He's pretty good. There's no elephant in our room."
