The Washington Capitals announced that Alexander Ovechkin will be away from the team to attend to a family health matter.

The Washington Capitals will be without their captain for the foreseeable future.

The Capitals announced on Tuesday morning that forward Alexander Ovechkin will be away from the team beginning today to attend to a family matter and the health of a loved one.

No timeline for Ovechkin's return was provided.

In situations like this, the only thing that matters is the well-being of Ovechkin and his entire family as they attend to the matters at hand. Needless to say, the entire hockey world no doubt wishes them nothing but the best.

Despite having already celebrated his 37th birthday, Ovechkin is in the midst of yet another productive season in 2022-23, currently sitting with 32 goals and 22 assists for 54 points in 54 games while playing over 20 minutes in nightly ice time.

The Capitals currently sit in the first wild-card spot in the Eastern Conference with a lead of one point over the rival Pittsburgh Penguins.

Washington called up forward Joe Snively from the AHL's Hershey Bears after the announcement. He has one assist in six games in the NHL this season.
