A pending free agent has decided to stay in Calgary.
The Calgary Flames locked in a key young piece on Wednesday, agreeing to terms with forward Yegor Sharangovich on a two-year contract extension worth an average annual value of $3.1 million.
The deal was negotiated after the Flames acquired Sharangovich's rights in the trade that sent Tyler Toffoli to the New Jersey Devils on Tuesday. It ties the 25-year-old to Calgary through the 2024-25 season and sets him up quite nicely to cash in on his next contract when the salary cap is likely to be higher.
Sharangovich is an interesting gamble.
The Belarus native has shown flashes of exciting potential throughout his young career thus far, breaking out for 24 goals as recently as 2021-22 and finishing in the top 10 in voting for the Calder Trophy. While his 2022-23 production was a step back for the young winger, Sharangovich will undoubtedly get a more plentiful role in Calgary than New Jersey could have offered him, and it may very well be the fresh start he needs to get his game back on track.
With Sharangovich now locked in, the Flames sit with a little over $2 million in remaining cap space ahead of free agency on July 1, according to PuckPedia.
