The Carolina Hurricanes re-sign Antti Raanta for another year on a $1.5-million deal.

The Carolina Hurricanes are bringing back a familiar face to round out a goalie tandem with Pyotr Kochetkov.

Carolina re-signed goaltender Antti Raanta to a one-year contract worth $1.5 million.

Raanta spent the past two seasons with the Hurricanes and recorded a .911 save percentage and six shutouts in that span. The 34-year-old netminder has also suited up for a team-high 19 playoff games during his Carolina tenure, where he posted a .918 SP and one shutout.

While the return of Raanta all but solidifies that Frederik Andersen won’t be returning, the Hurricanes have proven time and time again that they don’t need an A-level goaltender to compete. Carolina has recorded the third-best Expected Goals Against per 60 at 5-on-5 ( 2.21) through the past two seasons. Raanta and Andersen captured the Jennings Trophy in 2021-22, which is awarded to the surrenders the lowest goals against average.

It’s unclear how much of a workload Raanta will take on next year, as it all depends on how Kotchekov — a 2019 second-round selection — fares in the first year of his four-year contract, worth $2 million per year.
