The Carolina Hurricanes have agreed to terms with forward Martin Necas on a two-year contract extension.

Another young player has avoided arbitration at the last minute. 

With their hearing date inching closer and closer over the horizon, the Carolina Hurricanes and forward Martin Necas opted to find some common ground on Tuesday evening, agreeing to terms on a two-year contract extension worth an average annual value of $3 million. 

The details of the deal, which now ties Necas to Carolina through the 2023-24 season, such as its salary structure or the inclusion of any trade protection, have yet to be determined. 

After a lengthy stalemate, it's good to see the Hurricanes lock in an important young player. 

Necas has been a steady contributor in each of his three NHL seasons to this point, taking a tiny step back last year from the tremendous pandemic-shortened 2021 campaign he had the year prior, still finishing with 40 points while setting a career-high in games played.

That step back, though, might have just been the type of hiccup to worry Canes management when it came to hammering out an extension with the 23-year-old, however, as the team has only a little over $1.8 million in cap space to work with after locking in Ethan Bear and are now over the cap following today's signing. 

Still, Necas is a prime candidate to take another leap forward next season as the Hurricanes look poised to contend once again with an improved and re-tooled roster. And for just $3 million per year, that's a decent bargain for them to pay one of their exciting young players, too.
