The Chicago Blackhawks signing a bunch of veterans to short-term deals might seem counterintuitive to a rebuild, but it could actually help in the long run, says Ken Campbell.

Perhaps Chicago Blackhawks GM Kyle Davidson is tired of picking so high in the NHL draft. Or he's tired of watching other teams play in the playoffs.

Or maybe, just maybe, there is a method behind his madness in signing a conga line of veteran free agents on July 1.

The Blackhawks are in Year 7 of their rebuild, and it might just be time for Connor Bedard & Co., to at least be playing meaningful games down the stretch. Does the senior brigade, plus the return of Taylor Hall, give them a team that might do that? You'd hope so.

It will also give the young players in Chicago room to grow, where the Artyom Levshunovs and Frank Nazars won't risk being thrown into situations they might not be able to handle.

And, hey, who knows? Look what the Philadelphia Flyers did last season.
