Edmonton Oilers superfan Ben Stelter has passed away at the age of six after a battle with cancer, his father announced on Twitter.

Just prior to his fifth birthday, Stelter was diagnosed with a form of brain cancer known as glioblastoma. He underwent surgery to remove the tumor and received other forms of treatment before it returned in December.

A meeting with the Oilers sparked a friendship between him and the team, with the club going on a 10-game winning streak with Stelter in attendance.

Before the season began, the Oilers announced that they'd play the song La Bamba after wins in honor of Joey Moss, who passed away last year. Stelter became known for his catchphrase "Play La Bamba, baby" after victories, and while he couldn't visit the team during the Stanley Cup playoffs, his family shared videos of him cheering on the team from home.
