Free Agent Frenzy is officially upon us.
The Detroit Red Wings got the festivities started on Saturday morning, agreeing to terms with forward Klim Kostin on a two-year contract extension worth an average annual value of $2 million.
The deal, which ties the pending RFA to Detroit through the 2024-25 season, comes just days after the Red Wings acquired Kostin from the Edmonton Oilers in exchange for future considerations, opting against extending him a qualifying offer in order to avoid arbitration and lock down a long-term deal.
Kostin, a 2017 first-rounder, put up similar numbers to former teammate Kailer Yamamoto last season, who was acquired by the Red Wings in the same trade earlier this week but bought out by the club on Friday. With 11 goals and 10 assists for 21 points in 57 games, Kostin became something of a fan favorite in Edmonton thanks to his physical play and endearing personality. The hulking forward adds size and a dash of offensive upside to a rapidly improving Red Wings roster, and will be an unrestricted free agent upon expiry.
Stay tuned. The market has yet to open, and the deals have already begun to roll in.
