TORONTO - The Maple Leafs have signed forward Spencer Abbott to a one-year contract.

Abbott played one NHL game last season and spent most of 2013-14 with the AHL's Toronto Marlies.

The 26-year-old Hamilton native had 17 goals and 52 assists in 64 games for the Marlies and didn't register a point in his NHL debut Oct. 5.

With plenty of competition for bottom-six forward spots expected at Leafs training camp, Abbott will likely find himself in the minors to start the regular season.
