After reports surfaced on Sunday, the Washington Capitals announced they've agreed to acquire NHL salary cap information site CapFriendly.

The site is expected to operate independently until the transaction closes after the NHL draft and start of free agency, Capitals GM-president Brian MacLellan said in a statement Wednesday morning. The Capitals will also bring on brothers Jamie, Ryan and Christopher Davis to the organization once the deal closes.

"The Capitals have agreed to acquire CapFriendly, including its tools and functions, for its in-house hockey operations department," MacLellan said.

"This strategic move will provide the Capitals organization with the ability to digest, present and analyze both our internal and League supplied data."

The current Capfriendly.com launched in January 2016, one year after Capgeek.com was forced to shut down due to founder Matthew Wuest battling colon cancer. Wuest died on March 19, 2015, and CapFriendly is dedicated in his memory.

The site gathers contract information for the NHL while looking for news from credible outlets and reporters. It has salary cap information about players and teams as well as calculators and other tools. While hockey fans use the site, some NHL front offices are reported to have used it as well, according to Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman.

"The existing infrastructure will be a valuable addition to the team’s hockey operations department in many ways," MacLellan said. "We anticipate that this acquisition will significantly enhance and integrate the various branches of our hockey operations department, allowing us to strengthen our management, scouting, analytics and player development, in addition to augmenting our salary cap and contractual applications."

Other sites that feature NHL salary cap information include Puckpedia.com and Spotrac.com.

The NHL draft takes place June 28 and 29 at The Sphere in Las Vegas, while free agency opens on July 1.
