It's a busy day on the NHL waiver wire in the countdown to the March 8 trade deadline.
Edmonton Oilers forward and 1,000-game NHLer Sam Gagner is one of five players placed on waivers who could be sent to the AHL on Wednesday at 2 p.m. ET if they clear.
Two other players, who were placed on waivers Monday, were claimed by other teams.
The Calgary Flames claimed defenseman Joel Hanley off waivers from the Dallas Stars, while the Washington Capitals claimed forward Matthew Phillips from the Pittsburgh Penguins.
Phillips, 25, was originally claimed off waivers in mid-February by the Penguins from the Capitals. He had one goal and five points in 27 games for the Caps while averaging 10:16 in ice time per game. He spent some time on a line with Dylan Strome and Sonny Milano, but he also had some shifts with Strome and Alexander Ovechkin. During his few weeks there, the 2023 AHL first-team all-star only played in three games for the Penguins and recorded four shots.
Hanley, 32, joins the Flames after being part of the Stars organization since 2018-19. He played in 32 games for Dallas this season and averaged 13:41 per game, recording three assists, 36 hits and 32 shot blocks. The left-shot defenseman has been in the NHL for the past four seasons. And after the Flames traded right-shot defenseman Chris Tanev to the Stars last week, Calgary now gets another blueliner from Dallas on top of Artem Grushnikov in the original deal.
Time will tell whether Gagner and four other players will head to new teams on Wednesday.
Gagner, 34, is on his third stint with the Oilers during his 16-year NHL career, in which he's played 1,042 regular-season games and recorded 529 points so far. He has five goals and 10 points in 27 games this season while averaging just over 10 minutes of ice time per game. Gagner played three games in October with the AHL's Bakersfield Condors before signing an NHL contract – he had five points in three games.
The Hurricanes, meanwhile, placed forward Max Comtois on waivers after signing a two-way contract for the remainder of the year. Comtois has spent the season with the AHL's Chicago Wolves, putting up 12 goals and 16 assists for 28 points in 45 games. The 25-year-old has 210 games of NHL experience, all with the Anaheim Ducks, and has 38 career goals and 86 points.
Minnesota Wild forwards Vinni Lettieri and Jacob Lucchini are also on waivers. Lucchini, 28, has split the season between the NHL and AHL so far, with two points in 21 games for Minnesota and 23 points in 30 games for the Iowa Wild. Lettieri, 29, has seven points in 32 games for Minnesota and eight points in 10 games for Iowa.
Guillaume Brisebois, 26, has been on long-term injured reserve this season with an upper-body injury. The Vancouver Canucks placed him on waivers for the purpose of assignment to AHL Abbotsford. He recorded his first three NHL points last season in 17 games.
