The Philadelphia Flyers don't sound like they're shopping goalie Carter Hart, but for the right offer, GM Daniel Briere said he'd be willing to listen.
Back in March, Sportsnet's Jeff Marek raised the possibility of the Philadelphia Flyers gauging Carter Hart's value in the off-season trade market. On Saturday, Flyers GM Daniel Briere said he could entertain offers for the 24-year-old goaltender.
Philly Hockey Now's Chuck Bausman cited Briere's remarks in an interview with Philadelphia sports radio 94.1 WIP. “Most likely, Carter will be our goalie for the future, but I'm not in a position to turn down anything,” said the Flyers GM. “I have to listen.”
Hart has a year remaining on his contract with an average annual value of $3.979 million, though in actual salary, he'll earn $4.479 million for 2023-24, per CapFriendly. He becomes an RFA with arbitration rights next July and will be a year away from UFA eligibility.
The Flyers can open contract extension talks with Hart on July 1. Briere didn't sound like he's actively shopping his starter but could be gauging his trade value now in case those contract discussions become stalled. Hart could be interested in a long-term deal but could also be leery about investing his prime playing years with a rebuilding club.
The Philadelphia Inquirer's Mike Sielski and Gustav Elvin pointed out that trading Hart could be on hold for the moment, given the ongoing investigations regarding the 2018 Canadian World Junior team.
Hart was a member of that team but declined to comment other than stating he was fully co-operating with the NHL investigation. Sielski and Elvin suggest that interested clubs could prefer waiting for the full findings to be released by the league.
