    The Buffalo Sabres name pierced through thousands of entries in a naming contest more than 50 years ago, but what were some of the other options?

    The Buffalo Sabres' iconic logo came to be after the team selected a name from a contest before it took the ice in 1970.

    The owners of Buffalo's new NHL team, which was set to take the ice in 1970, went to the public in search of ideas. And there were many of them.

    "A sabre is renowned as a clean, sharp, decisive and penetrating weapon on offense, as well as a strong parrying weapon on defense," as explained in NHL.com's nickname origins page in 2016.
