The Pittsburgh Penguins and Washington Capitals saw their lengthy playoff streaks end last season, and they're currently out of a playoff position with under one month until the NHL trade deadline.

Penguins GM Kyle Dubas signed forward Jesse Puljujarvi on Sunday, and they still have Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, Jake Guentzel, Bryan Rust, Erik Karlsson and Kris Letang in the lineup as they try to prolong their competitive window.

The Capitals, meanwhile, have Alex Ovechkin, T.J. Oshie, Tom Wilson, Max Pacioretty, and John Carlson as part of their core that was in a playoff position over the holidays but has since slumped.

Both rivals have been part of trade speculation, with the Capitals having about $4 million in cap space and the Penguins' Jake Guentzel being linked to at least five clubs.

The Hockey News Pre-Game Show co-hosts Ryan Kennedy and Michael Traikos put on their GM caps to answer the question that could shape not only the short-term future but the long-term outlook for the Penguins and Capitals: should they buy, sell or stand pat in the next month?

(Want to skip straight to the Capitals? Head to 2:28 in the video.)
