The Anaheim Ducks have hit the waiver wire again, this time grabbing New York Islanders forward Ross Johnston.
The waiver giveth and the waiver wire taketh away.
After losing defenseman Lassi Thomson to waivers on Monday, the Anaheim Ducks went back to waivers, claiming forward Ross Johnston from the New York Islanders.
Johnston's been a bit part player for the Islanders over the five seasons, only featuring in 20 or more games in two of the last five seasons.
At 6-foot-five, 231 pounds, Johnston plays the part of a big, physical fourth liner well.
Despite playing in precious few games over the last few seasons, he's managed to wrack up a lot of hits and a few fights in that period.
He'll likely feature as more of a 13th forward for most of this season, and might even find himself on waivers again.
But with Leo Carlsson set to miss a few games to start the season and Alex Killorn still about a month away from game action, Johnston should get some games at the start of the season.
Having players of Johnston's mold is never a bad idea on a team riddled with young, skilled players. He can provide some protection for players like Carlsson, Mintyukov and even Trevor Zegras.
He's projected on a line with veteran Sam Carrick and training camp standout Brett Leason.
If nothing else, I expect him to stick with the team for longer than Thomson did.
