Ducks general manager Pat Verbeek is making the most of his Thursday. Earlier this morning, he traded defenseman Brian Dumoulin to the New Jersey Devils for a second-round pick and prospect Herman Träff.

With the Ducks only having six defensemen on their active roster, Verbeek went out and acquired Oliver Kylington from the New York Islanders in exchange for future considerations. Kylington was traded by the Colorado Avalanche to the New York Islanders less than an hour ago in the Brock Nelson deal.

Kylington signed a one-year, $1,050,000 deal with the Avalanche this past summer after spending his first seven seasons in the NHL with the Calgary Flames. He’s only played in 13 games this season due to an upper-body injury, but was in the Avalanche lineup for their past four games.

A mobile skater with decent puck skills, Kylington’s acquisition will provide the Ducks with a seventh defenseman who can fill in on occasion. It’s a no-risk move given there wasn’t any cost to acquire him and his contract is up at the end of the season.
