The Anaheim Ducks have announced that they have signed second-overall pick Leo Carlsson to an entry-level, three-year contract.
Carlsson was selected by the Ducks in a somewhat surprise move but since has received praise for his skillset. He was named the Swedish Junior Hockey Player of the Year as he scored the most points and assists by a junior player at just 18 years old. He put up 10 goals and 15 assists during last season in the Swedish Hockey League
-"Carlsson led SHL players 20 and under in points per game (.57) and ranked second in goals, and third in points and assists."
He brings major IQ and a potential two-way skillset to the table. Carlsson became favored by the Ducks as the draft process went on, and the team loved his ability to play on both sides of the ice. He should be their cornerstone player for years to come, but the question remains of where he will play next season.
He will be with the team once training camp opens this fall, but the team could elect to have him join the Ducks, go play for the AHL affiliate San Diego Gulls or head back to Sweden for some extra experience. So his future, at least for next season, remains up in the air.
The team signing Carlsson is a good first step, and this was a home run pick. It'll be fascinating to see how Anaheim uses him this season and where they place him. With him being so young, it could make sense to hold off on the NHL for now unless he really shows out in camp.
