Rodwin Dionicio will resume his 2024-25 season in his native Switzerland
On Friday, the San Diego Gulls announced they had loaned defenseman Rodwin Dionicio (20) to EHC Biel-Bienne of the Swiss National League.
Dionicio was a healthy scratch for 15 of the Gulls' 41 games in 2024-25, scoring five goals and four assists in the 26 games he played.
On Jan. 29, directly following a game against the Toronto Marlies, the 6-foot-2 left-shot defenseman was involved in an altercation. His actions earned him a three-game suspension.
On Jan. 30, the Gulls announced that they had assigned him to the Tulsa Oilers of the ECHL. A day later, on Jan. 31, he was loaned to EHC Biel-Bienne.
Dionicio was selected in the fifth round (129th overall) in the 2023 NHL Entry Draft, his second year of eligibility, from the Windsor Spitfires of the OHL.
He was traded to the Saginaw Spirit in the middle of the 2023-24 season, where he racked up a total of 73 points in 60 regular season games for the two clubs. He scored 17 points in 17 playoff games en route to a Memorial Cup Championship with Saginaw.
He represented Switzerland at three consecutive World Junior Championship tournaments, scoring a total of five points in 15 games.
On Jan. 16, 2024, it was announced that Dionicio signed a three-year contract with EHC Biel and was set to begin his professional career overseas in his native Switzerland.
On May 17, 2024, just ahead of the Memorial Cup tournament, the Ducks announced they'd signed Dionicio to his three-year entry-level deal and he'd later be assigned to San Diego for the start of the 2024-25 season.
Rather than play in the ECHL for the Oilers, it was agreed upon he'd finish the 2024-25 season in Switzerland.
If and when he returns to North America and is assigned to the AHL, he will serve his three-game suspension.
Dionicio played his first game for EHC Biel on Sunday, registering two shots and a minor penalty in 15:29 TOI in a 3-2 loss.
