John Geliebter-USA TODAY Sports - TRADE: Ducks send Adam Henrique, Sam Carrick to Oilers for draft picks

After dealing Ilya Lyubushkin to the Toronto Maple Leafs last week, Ducks GM Pat Verbeek consummated another deal with another Canadian team earlier today.

The Ducks sent forwards Adam Henrique, Sam Carrick and a 2024 seventh-round pick to the Edmonton Oilers in exchange for the Oilers' 2024 first-round pick and a conditional 2025 fifth-round pick. The fifth-round pick becomes a fourth-round pick if the Oilers win the Cup this season.

The Ducks retained fifty percent of both Henrique and Carrick's salaries, with the Tampa Bay Lightning playing third-party broker and retaining half of Henrique's remaining salary.

The Lightning received a conditional 2026 fourth-round pick from the Oilers for their role in brokering the deal. The pick becomes a 2025 fourth-round pick if the Oilers do not win the Cup this season. The Lightning also sent the reserve rights to goaltender Ty Taylor to the Oilers.

What does this mean for the Ducks?

It was a given that Henrique would be dealt in the final year of his contract. If not for an injury suffered right before the deadline last year, he might have been moved even sooner. Henrique provides versatility in many different forms and will help fill a role for Cup-contending Edmonton.

Carrick is also in the final year of his deal and will provide an alternative at fourth-line center ahead of Sam Gagner, who was waived by the Oilers yesterday. His physical nature and penalty-killing prowess will be an asset as well.

To get back a first-round pick is a good get for Verbeek after deals with similar packages were conducted for Sean Monahan and Elias Lindholm.

Retaining both Henrique and Carrick means that the Ducks have now used all three of their retention spots after retaining Lyubushkin's salary.

The Ducks are a bit shorthanded due to not only the trade but a multitude of injuries. They're forced to go with 11 forwards and seven defensemen tonight against Ottawa out of necessity and the lineup could potentially look different on Friday against Dallas as well if more deals are made before then.
