Could Anaheim land the young offensive star?
As the Anaheim Ducks' offseason continues, we are starting to see some of the plans from General Manager Pat Verbeek. The team started off free agency by signing former Florida Panthers defenseman Radko Gudas to a three-year deal and former Tampa Bay Lightning wing Alex Killorn to a four-year deal. It was the kind of move that a rebuilding team normally doesn't make, so it's clear that Anaheim wants to start winning as early as next season.
Adding another possible wrinkle to this interesting offseason is that the Ducks are reportedly interested in trading for a potential game-changing wing.
Alex DeBrincat's status with his current team, the Ottawa Senators, remains up in the air. He wants a new deal, and the Senators aren't exactly willing to give it to him. It's being reported that he wants a new deal that is around eight years for $8.75 million a year. The price range is a little high for DeBrincat, but Anaheim is one of the few teams that is able to pay that.
Last season for Ottawa, he scored 27 goals and had 39 assists. Just a season prior, though, DeBrincat scored 41 goals and had 37 assists, so he is capable of having a major season. It was his second time scoring at least 41 goals in a season. He is a versatile scorer but is also mainly one-dimensional, as he provides little to no defensive skills.
The Ducks' interest in DeBrincat makes sense as they are looking to add in a number one wing for their top line, plus they have the money and assets to make a deal possible. If the team could land a player like DeBrincat, it would go a long way in their rebuild. Things would be expedited, and the Ducks would land a true scorer to pair alongside all the young talent.
It'll be interesting to watch this play out and see where DeBrincat calls home next season and beyond.
