Ducks News: Will Anaheim Prioritize A Trevor Zegras Extension This Summer?

The Anaheim Ducks have some decisions to make this offseason, with one of them being what to do with their young star Trevor Zegras. He is due to get paid this offseason as he will be a restricted free agent this coming summer. The team would be wise to make sure and re-sign him as he has been one of the biggest bright spots for the team over the last few down seasons.

But some don't see it that way. Former goalie Mike McKenna spoke with insider Frank Seravalli about what he thinks Anaheim is looking for this offseason.

"Well, it’s Zegras. I’m not sure if he’s a Pat Verbeek style of player. His skill is incredible, he scored, and he’s put up points, but has he done much more than highlight reel material? When you look at his general impact on the game, there’s still more ceiling to it. Does Verbeek want to commit eight years to Zegras? I’m very curious about that if it’s not a short-term deal. I’m not sure how that one plays out."

Zegras has been a star since he took the ice for Anaheim. He has dazzled fans with his highlights and has given Ducks fans a reason to watch games while the team has been down. But McKenna does bring up some interesting questions. Does General Manager Pat Verbeek see Zegras as long-term option for this team?

We will find out this summer but Zegras did put up some nice numbers last season. He scored 23 goals and had 42 assists last season for Anaheim and will be looking to grow his game even more under new head coach Greg Cronin.

Even if the Ducks don't see him as a long-term star player, they would be unwise to not give him a new deal. Zegras has been nothing short of awesome for the team since being drafted and he is a fan favorite. He produces on the ice and puts people into seats as well.

The NHL 23 cover player should be back in Anaheim next season as the Ducks look to get back into contention. It's as simple as that.
