Biro Gets Opportunity After Excellent Showing In Preseason

The Buffalo Sabres begin a stretch of three games in four nights as they travel to Philadelphia to face the Flyers at Wells Fargo Arena on Wednesday. On Tuesday, the club announced that rookie winger Zach Benson suffered a recurrence of a lower-body injury in the 4-0 win over Colorado on Sunday and that the 18-year-old would likely be placed on injured reserve.

Benson’s misfortune has resulted in an opportunity for 25-year-old Brandon Biro, who was recalled on Tuesday and will play in only his second NHL game against the Flyers.

"(Biro) had a very good preseason, but it's way more than the preseason. This is a guy that multiple times last year, we were ready to call him up and he was not healthy, he was injured in Rochester." Sabres head coach Don Granato said on Tuesday. "He comes into camp this year. He has a great camp and now we have a roster spot. We are going to use it and put him right in the lineup"

The Sherwood Park, AB native was signed as an undrafted free agent in March 2020 after four years at Penn State University, and last season with the Amerks finished second in scoring with 51 points (16 goals, 35 assists) in 49 games. This season, after clearing waivers and being sent to the AHL, he has six points (2 goals, 4 assists) in five games.

"There's a lot to his game to like. (He's a very, very talented player. Skilled, evasive, intelligent, he can make plays with skilled players." Granato said. "He can play right-wing, left-wing, (and) center. He's done well in all three spots, but I think the real exciting thing for me is that he complements other players."

Biro will slot in on the right side with Jordan Greenway and Tage Thompson. Tyson Jost will be inserted in the lineup, and Victor Olofsson will sit for the second time this season as a healthy scratch.
