Team Canada continued their winning ways with a 5-3 victory over Finland, and Buffalo Sabres’ Dylan Cozens, Owen Power, and Bowen Byram were prominent in the contest, but for different reasons. Cozens continued his goal-scoring prowess, with a goal in his fourth straight game, to get Canada on the scoreboard after the Finns took a 2-0 lead on goals from Jesse Puljujarvi and Valtteri Puustinen.
Power had his best offensive outing of the tournament thus far, with a goal to tie the game in the second period and a pair of assists. Byram was ejected from the game in the middle frame for battling in front of the net with Puljujarvi. The Pittsburgh Penguins was assessed a minor for roughing, and the Sabres defenseman responded with a “slash” to Puljujarvi’s pubic area.
Sabres defenseman Rasmus Dahlin also scored and was ejected in Sweden’s victory over Latvia on Saturday. The blueliner opened the scoring less than five minutes into the first period on a setup by soon-to-be ex-teammate Victor Olofsson. With Latvia rallying to tie the game in the middle frame, Dahlin hit Haralds Egle with an elbow to the head and was assessed a minor for roughing, a major for charging, a 10-minute misconduct, and a game misconduct.
The Swedes proceeded to score four times in the second and one more time in the third to win 7-2.
Winger J-J Peterka had a coming of age at the 2023 IIHF World Championships, leading Germany to a silver medal and being named the tournament’s top forward. After a career-high 28 goals in his second NHL season, the 22-year-old is repeating his international success at the tournament in Czechia this month. Germany is 4-2-0 through six games and Peterka is second behind only Oliver Kapanen of Finland with five goals.
Peterka scored twice in a 4-2 win over Poland on Saturday.
