Dahlin avoids suspension after being ejected against Latvia

OTP - Can The Sabres Play The Style That Ruff Wants To?

Buffalo Sabres defenseman Bowen Byram was suspended by the IIHF(International Ice Hockey Federation) for one game at the 2024 World Championship in Czechia for a major stick infraction against Finland’s Jesse Puljujarvi on Saturday.

The IIHF’s disciplinary panel determined “the Player swung his stick into the groin area of (Puljujarvi) with a degree of force which could have endangered him…..and it was considered that the level of force used by (Byram), while not looking in the direction of where he was swinging his stick, heightens the level of recklessness displayed by him.”

Due to the suspension, Byram will be unavailable to Canada in their contest against Switzerland on Sunday.

Sabres defenseman Rasmus Dahlin was also ejected in Sweden’s 7-2 victory over Latvia on Saturday after a high hit to forward Haralds Egle. Dahlin was assessed a minor for roughing, a major for charging, a 10-minute misconduct, and a game misconduct, but the IIHF will not suspend the blueliner and it is expected he will be available for Sweden’s match against France on Monday.

The preliminary round of the tournament will conclude on Tuesday, with the quarterfinal beginning on Thursday. Currently, Canada with Byram, Owen Power, and Dylan Cozens are undefeated at 4-0-1, and tied with Switzerland in second place in Group A. Host Czechia is in first place with a 4-0-1-1 record, but has played one more game than the Swiss and Canadians.

In Group B, Dahlin and Team Sweden are undefeated at 5-0-0, while J-J Peterka and Team Germany are in second spot with a 4-2-0 record. Canada finishes off the preliminary round against Czechia on Tuesday, while Germany faces France, and Sweden takes on Slovakia.
