The Buffalo Sabres will be without goaltender Eric Comrie for a significant period of time, after the veteran backup suffered a lower-body injury in Friday’s 5-4 loss to New Jersey in Newark, NJ. Comrie could not get back up on his skates early in the second period after a save on Devils defenseman Kevin Bahl’s point shot and did not return.
Sabres GM Kevyn Adams indicated on Saturday that Comrie underwent an MRI and although it will be at least a few days until they can make an accurate prognosis, they expect him to be out for at least a few weeks.
Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen replaced Comrie on Friday and took the loss after allowing three goals on 21 shots.
Adams indicated that goalie Devon Levi, who has been out since suffering a lower-body injury against Calgary on October 18, is improving but is not ready to return to the lineup.
"Devon had a good day (Friday) and a good day today, but he hasn't been able to practice and not he's not ready to play," Adams said. "You don't want to put him in a situation where you're backing up. The expectation with him as long as he continues to be in a good place if we have a day off Monday, and then join for full team practice on Tuesday, and then (he'll be) ready to go by Wednesday."
With Levi unavailable, the Sabres recalled goaltender Devin Cooley from the Rochester Americans of the AHL. Cooley, 26, was signed as a free agent after spending three seasons with the Nashville Predators organization, and with the Amerks, he is 3-0-1, with a 3.46 GAA and .903 save %.
Following the Sunday matinee against Colorado, the Sabres have two full days off before playing a home-and-home with the Philadelphia Flyers on Wednesday and Friday, followed by their first meeting with the Toronto Maple Leafs in Toronto on Saturday.
