Canada faces Switzerland, Sweden takes on Czechia in the semi-final at the World Championships
Rasmus Dahlin is one of the best players in the NHL but has yet to make his mark for his country internationally. The 24-year-old has only a silver medal from the 2018 World Junior Championships in Buffalo six years ago to his credit but chose to play for Sweden at the World Championships in Czechia this spring and will likely be a part of Tre Kronor’s squad for the Four Nations Face-Off next February and the Olympics in Italy in two years.
Dahlin played a big part in Sweden’s perfect 7-0 record in the preliminary round, and stepped up even more in the quarter-final against archrival Finland on Thursday. The Sabres blueliner opened the scoring with 4:58 remaining in the third period and assisted on Joel Eriksson-Ek’s game-winner in the 2-1 overtime victory. Winger Victor Olofsson had three shots on goal in 15:29, but did not get on the scoreboard.
Sweden will now advance to the semi-final to take on host Czechia on Saturday, while Canada will face Switzerland in the other final-four matchup. The Canadians had a relatively easy time in a 6-3 victory over Slovakia on Thursday but will have a difficult task against the Swiss, who went 5-1-1 in the preliminary round and allowed only 12 goals against.
In the Stanley Cup Playoffs, former Sabre Evander Kane went scoreless for the Edmonton Oilers in their 3-2 double overtime victory in Game 1 of the Western Conference Final over the Dallas Stars on Thursday, playing 22:04 and registering four shots on goal. In the Eastern Conference Final, Florida and ex-Sabres Sam Reinhart, Kyle Okposo, Brandon Montour, Evan Rodrigues, and Dmitry Kulikov will hope to group 2-0 on the New York Rangers at Madison Square Garden on Friday.
