Buffalo Sabres training camp did not get off to an uneventful start on Wednesday, as defenseman Rasmus Dahlin left the club’s first practice at Key Bank Center after appearing briefly and did not return to the ice.
"I've got no update, it was just one of those things. You pass in the puck and something happened," Sabres head coach Lindy Ruff said after practice. “So (as a) precaution, (we) got him off (the ice). He's going to get looked at, and then go find out what's going on."
Ruff could not provide any more specifics on the nature of the injury, other than saying it was not lower-body.
Dahlin is entering the first year of an eight-year, $88 million contract extension this season and is coming off his first 20-goal campaign, in which he missed one regular season game. The 24-year-old former first-overall pick has been lauded not only for his offensive abilities on the ice but for his leadership in the locker room, which is why he is expected to be named the Sabres next team captain sometime before the start of the regular season.
"(Rasmus) is a game changer each and every night," Sabres winger Alex Tuch said. “Ever since I got here, he's raised my level of compete and he's made me want to be a better player. That's what he does to each and every guy. He expects a lot of each guy...and he really puts the most amount of pressure on himself."
Buffalo will practice on Thursday morning, and the club is likely to provide an update on Dahlin’s status.
