Kane’s Oilers advance to second round

Evander Kane joined a large group of former Buffalo Sabres who advanced to the second-round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs, as the Edmonton Oilers eliminated the Los Angeles Kings in five games with a 4-3 victory on Wednesday. Kane scored his second goal of the playoffs to open the scoring and had three shots on goal in 16:42 in the series-clinching victory.

Kane joins Casey Mittelstadt, Sam Reinhart, Brandon Montour, Evan Rodrigues, Dmitri Kulikov, and Jimmy Vesey who have reached the round of eight. Former Buffalo draft pick Brandon Hagel and ex-Sabres Conor Sheary and Colin Miller were eliminated when the Tampa Bay Lightning and Winnipeg Jets bowed out earlier this week.

On Thursday, two more former Sabres face possible elimination, as Jake McCabe and Ilya Lyubushkin’s Toronto Maple Leafs are down 3-2 to the Boston Bruins and Ryan O’Reilly’s Nashville Predators trail 3-2 to Tyler Myers and Nikita Zadorov’s Vancouver Canucks.

The most surprising change of fortune has been the reigning Stanley Cup champion Vegas Golden Knights, who took a 2-0 lead over the Stars with a pair of wins in Dallas, but squandered that advantage with a pair of home losses and dropping Game 5 3-2 at the American Airlines Center on Wednesday. Former Sabre William Carrier had a goal and two shots on goal in 9:25, while Jack Eichel and Brayden McNabb added assists in the loss. Eichel led all Vegas forwards with just over 24 minutes in ice time.
