The second round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs may come to a close this weekend, as only the winner between the Edmonton Oilers and Vancouver Canucks is still in doubt. The Canucks lead their best-of-seven series 3-2 with Game 6 on Saturday in Edmonton, while the two other series were wrapped up on Friday, with the Florida Panthers and Dallas Stars advancing to the Eastern and Western Conference Final.
In the Panthers 2-1 win at TD Garden, defenseman Gustav Forsling scored the game-winner with 93 seconds left in regulation. Five former Sabres were scoreless in the contest, but defenseman Brandon Montour was on the ice for both Panthers goals and played nearly 23 minutes in the contest.
Nick Cousins replaced Kyle Okposo after playing in the first five games of the series, Dmitry Kulikov was +1 in the game in just over 11 minutes of ice time, Sam Reinhart had two shots on goal in 22:49, and Evan Rodrigues played 13:33.
The loss could be the last game that goalie Linus Ullmark wears a Bruins uniform, as it is expected that the former Vezina Trophy will be traded over the summer. Ullmark did not start in the last 11 playoff games after losing in Game 2 of the first-round series against the Toronto Maple Leafs. Jeremy Swayman took over as the primary starter and was the primary reason why the Bruins beat the Leafs and extended the series against Florida.
The Stars 2-1 victory over Colorado came in double overtime on a goal from former Av Matt Duchene. Casey Mittelstadt played 28:27, had three shots on goal and was on the ice for Jamie Benn’s third-period tying goal. The former Sabre finished the post-season with nine points (3 goals, 6 assists) in 11 games.
