Boston dealt Ullmark to the Senators with one year left on his current deal
Former Buffalo Sabres goalie Linus Ullmark was traded by Boston to the Ottawa Senators last June in part because the Bruins would not be able to afford to make needed additions in free agency over the summer, afford Ullmark's $5 million cap hit for this season and re-sign his former tandem partner Jeremy Swayman to a new contract.
The Bruins finally locked up Swayman on an eight-year, $66 million contract ($8.25 million AAV) this week after a lengthy holdout, and on Wednesday the Sens extended Ullmark four years for the same $8.25 million cap hit beginning next season.
The 31-year-old former Vezina Trophy winner played from 2015 to 2021 with Buffalo before signing a four-year free agent deal with the Atlantic Division rival Bruins, and last season split time with Swayman, going 22-10-7, with a 2.55 GAA and .915 save %, but lost his starting job to the younger netminder in the playoffs.
Ottawa has been seeking a front-line starting goalie since the departure of former Sabre Craig Anderson in 2020, but they have struck out with two-time Cup winner Matt Murray, veteran Cam Talbot, and free agent Joonas Korpisalo, who was signed to a five-year, $20 million contract in 2023 and shipped to the Bruins as part of the Ullmark deal in June.
