Wahlberg has nine points in 20 games with AHL Rochester this season
The Buffalo Sabres received more news on their prospects heading to Ottawa for the 2025 IIHF World Junior Championships after the announcements made by Team Canada and Team USA earlier in the week.
Rochester Americans forward Anton Wahlberg has been selected by Sweden as one of their 13 forwards for the upcoming tournament starting later this month. The 19-year-old played for his country last December at the 2024 IIHF World Juniors in Gothenburg alongside current Amerks teammate Noah Ostlund, scoring three points in seven games and winning a silver medal.
The 2023 second-rounder came over after completing his SHL season last April with Malmo, and played 14 regular season and playoff games for Rochester last season. Wahlberg has nine points (4 goals, 5 assists) in 20 games this year for the Amerks.
The Sabres' other 2023 second-rounder, defenseman Maxim Strbak, was selected for Slovakia’s preliminary roster. The 19-year-old is a shoo-in to play for his country for a fourth time, as the Michigan State sophomore scored seven points in the tournament last December.
Team Canada selected Sabres goalie prospect Scott Ratzlaff for their WJC selection camp, and Team USA chose 2024 draftees Adam Kleber and Brodie Ziemer. A few European countries have not announced their preliminary rosters yet, but it is expected that 2024 first-rounders Konsta Helenius and Norwin Panocha will be on the rosters for Finland and Germany, as they were on their countries' 2024 WJC squads.
