Five former Buffalo Sabres are looking to get the Stanley Cup Final, but the Florida Panthers have a rather large obstacle in New York Rangers goalie Igor Shesterkin blocking their path. The former Vezina Trophy winner was spectacular in a 33-save effort, holding off a late Panthers rally to get to overtime, where Alexander Wennberg scored to give the Rangers the victory and a 2-1 lead in the Eastern Conference Final.

Ex-Sabre Sam Reinhart had the most success against Shesterkin, scoring a pair of power-play goals in the first period. Brandon Montour led the Panthers in ice time with over 28 minutes, while Dmitry Kulikov played 13 minutes and was -2 in the game. Evan Rodrigues assisted on Gustav Forsling’s tying goal in the third and was a central figure in the game’s most controversial moment, as the Panthers center was on the receiving end of an elbow from Rangers defenseman Jacob Trouba.

Trouba was already being penalized for slashing and received a major for elbowing which was later reduced on video review to a minor. The NHL Department of Player Safety reviewed the incident and fined Trouba $5,000.

Former Sabres captain Kyle Okposo was a healthy scratch for the fourth straight game, and Rangers forward Jimmy Vesey missed his second straight game after a heavy hit from Kulikov in Game 2.

At the 2024 Memorial Cup in Saginaw, Michigan on Sunday, Buffalo Sabres prospect Vsevolod Komarov had a pair of power-play helpers for Drummondville in their contest against the host Saginaw Spirit, but after taking a 2-0 lead, the Spirit rallied with four goals in the second and third period in a 4-3 victory over the Voltigeurs.

On Monday, Sabres 2022 top pick Matthew Savoie and the Moose Jaw Warriors take on the OHL champion London Knights, who shut out Drummondville on Saturday.
