The second round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs continued on Monday with the New York Rangers failing to put away the Carolina Hurricanes and having to go back to Raleigh for Game 6 on Thursday, and the Dallas Stars taking a commanding 3-1 lead over the Colorado Avalanche with a 5-1 victory.
Former Sabre Casey Mittelstadt scored the only goal for the Avs, who were without defenseman Devon Toews out of the lineup due to illness and will have to go on without winger Valeri Nichushkin, who has been suspended for six months by the NHL and was placed in Stage 3 of the league’s Player Assistance Program.
Other Ex-Sabres on Monday:
Jimmy Vesey (NYR) 11:26 TOI, 2 SOG
Sam Reinhart, Dmitri Kulikov, Kyle Okposo, Brandon Montour, and Evan Rodrigues have a chance to advance to the Eastern Conference Final, as the Florida Panthers are up 3-1 and play Game 5 vs. Boston in Sunrise, FL on Tuesday, while Nikita Zadorov and Tyler Myers have a chance to go up 3-1 against Evander Kane and the Oilers in Game 4 in Edmonton.
At the World Championships in Czechia, Dylan Cozens scored the opening goal in Canada’s 5-1 win over Denmark on Sunday. Bowen Byram had an assist in the victory and Owen Power had two shots on goal and played nearly 13 minutes in the contest.
On Monday, both Rasmus Dahlin and Victor Olofsson got on the scoresheet in a 6-1 victory over teammate J-J Peterka and Team Germany. The Sabres top blueliner had two assists in the game, including setting up his soon-to-be-former teammate for a tally with three seconds left in the first period.
Peterka, who led Germany to a silver medal at the tournament last May, went scoreless in 17:44, with four shots on goal.
